7 hurt in Navy small boat training mishap off Virginia

NORFOLK, Va., July 22 (UPI) -- A U.S. Navy training mishap off the coast of Virginia Monday left four sailors and three civilian instructors injured, a Navy spokeswoman said.

Lt. Lauren Cole said the seven were injured during a small boat training exercise when a rigid hull inflatable boat collided with the USNS Big Horn near Thimble Shoals Channel off Hampton Roads, WAVY-TV, Newport News, reported.

The TV station said the sailors were from the USS Bataan and instructors were from the Center for Security Forces.

Six of the victims were taken by ambulance to Sentara Virginia Beach General Hospital. One sailor was treated at the Joint Expeditionary Base Little Creek in Virginia.

Two sailors were released from the hospital and one was held for observation. WAVY-TV said the condition of the three civilians was unknown, but Cole said none experienced life-threatening injuries.
