Woman charged in anthrax letter hoax

JASPER, Fla., July 25 (UPI) -- A Florida woman was indicted for mailing fake anthrax letters to government officials and the state's two U.S. senators, the U.S. attorney's office said.

The indictment unsealed Tuesday accused Kathryn Cohen Allen, 45, of Jasper, Fla., of mailing threatening letters containing a powdery substance to the offices of U.S. Sens. Marco Rubio, a Republican, and Bill Nelson, a Democrat, as well as the Hamilton County, Fla., Correctional Institution, the Hamilton County Health Department, the Hamilton County Tax Collector's Office, the Florida Department of Children and Family Services and three private citizens, the U.S. attorney's office for Florida's middle district said in a release Tuesday.

Field and laboratory testing determined the white powdery substance was not hazardous.

Rubio's office said in a statement, "We appreciate law enforcement's diligence in working to apprehend the suspect and helping us continue to serve our constituents."

"Law enforcement did its job," Nelson's office said. "Now it's a legal matter and will be decided in the courts."
