Feds offer $150K for Dallas letter scare

DALLAS, May 17 (UPI) -- Federal investigators say they hope a reward will help find the person who mailed about 380 white-powder envelopes since 2008 in the Dallas-Fort Worth area.

A $150,000 reward was announced Wednesday by the FBI in Dallas and the Postal Inspection Service Office in Fort Worth for information leading to the arrest, prosecution and conviction of the perpetrator, CNN reported.

Analysts said they have few clues because the person who mailed the envelopes didn't leave fingerprints or other identifiers.

Federal profilers said they think the suspect is a white male at least 30 years old and may be considered eccentric by others, CNN said Thursday. The profile said the mailer may have experience with mental health facilities.

All of the envelopes have been found to be harmless and didn't contain any toxic substances.

Officials said the mailer sent nearly two dozen letters containing white powder to early childhood development centers and elementary schools in recent weeks. Officials said every envelope must be screened.

FBI offices in Dallas and Washington did not comment on whether the individual is the same one who sent similar envelopes to congressional members earlier this year. FBI agents in Dallas said the mailer seems to have been more focused on educational facilities rather than government offices recently.
