WASHINGTON, April 15 (UPI) -- Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla., would be the best choice as Mitt Romney's running mate in the U.S. presidential race, a top conservative commentator said Sunday.
Mike Huckabee said on "Fox News Sunday" the Tea Party stalwart would be his choice to join the ticket, but urged Romney to be patient before announcing his selection.
"Because that just gives people more time to go after the target," Huckabee said. He added the best strategy would be keeping several names in the mix and then making the official selection late in the campaign.
Huckabee said sparring over a running mate would not help Romney's momentum heading into the summer. He said Romney had the advantage over President Obama due to the economy and public unhappiness over the direction of the country.
"All incumbent elections are about the incumbent," Huckabee said. "That's the advantage Romney has."
Obama adviser David Axelrod told Fox the Republicans were not offering much that would appeal to middle-class voters. "At the end of the day, I think the American people want to choose a vision to hold out the greatest possible opportunity for them and for the middle class that want to see our economy rebuilt," he said.
