WASHINGTON, May 17 (UPI) -- Republican U.S. presidential candidate Newt Gingrich doesn't want to talk about the sizable debt records show he had with high-end jeweler Tiffany's.

Approached by Politico about whether Gingrich has paid off the $250,000 to $500,000 listed on financial disclosure forms as debt to Tiffany's in 2005 and 2006, Gingrich spokesman Rick Tyler responded by e-mail: "No comment."

While Gingrich left Congress in 1999, the Tiffany account showed up in public records because his wife Callista remained employed by the House Agriculture Committee until 2007. She listed the "revolving charge account" at Tiffany and Co. as her spouse's obligation.

Politico said it was unclear whether Gingrich has paid off the debt. Having only recently jumped into the presidential race, he has not been required to file disclosure forms since leaving the House.
