Hoyer wants to be minority whip

WASHINGTON, Nov. 8 (UPI) -- House Minority Leader Steny Hoyer, D-Md., announced Monday afternoon he is going after the minority whip post now that Democrats will lose the House majority.

With House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., announcing she will seek the position of minority leader, Hoyer, the current majority leader, said he wants the whip position now held by Rep. James Clyburn, D-S.C., who wants to keep the job.

"I am running for Democratic Whip in order to defend Dem accomplishments, unify our Caucus & begin the hard work of winning back the majority," tweeted, Hoyer, who had said Friday he was exploring a bid.

One possible scenario would be a domino effect with Pelosi becoming minority leader, Hoyer moving to minority whip, Clyburn becoming caucus chairman and Rep. John Larson, D-Conn., the current chairman, moving to vice chairman.
