SEATTLE, Sept. 14 (UPI) -- A former FBI agent defended an American woman convicted of killing of her British roommate in Italy, saying forensic techniques in the case were badly handled.
Steve Moore, who is retired from the FBI, said he had to speak out about the lack of evidence against Amanda Knox and Rafaelle Sollecito. He went to Seattle to meet Knox's family, KOMO-TV in Seattle reported Tuesday.
Knox is nearing the appeal of her conviction after three years of imprisonment for her alleged involvement in the killing of Meredith Kercher, the television station reported.
"I really am in disbelief at how badly this has been blundered," said Moore, who KOMO-TV said has a background in investigating violent crimes and terrorism.
"(Knox) wasn't in the room; she just hovered over the bloody floor. Rudy Guede, who did the murder, is all over the room. The only way to prove me wrong is to keep all the DNA evidence they have kept secret from the defense and open it up. I am inviting them to make a liar out of me," Moore said.
Some in Italy, where the slaying occurred, are calling Moore a phony expert trying to get publicity, KOMO-TV said.
Moore replied, "I have no dog in this fight, I have no money involved in this. I'm up here on my own dime. I'm doing this because something has to be done."
Moore is calling for the top DNA experts in the world to independently review the evidence. He said if Italians knew the truth, they'd want her released, too, KOMO-TV said.
