Spain's lower house approves abortion

MADRID, Dec. 17 (UPI) -- The Spanish lower house Thursday approved a bill that would legalize abortion in the largely Roman Catholic country.

The bill still must be voted on by the upper house Senate before it becomes law, El Pais reported online.

The new law would allow pregnancies to be terminated up to 14 weeks from conception. Spain's current laws only allow abortions in extreme cases such as predetermined in-utero complications threatening the life of the fetus or mother and in cases of rape.
