Students Day protests expected in Iran

TEHRAN, Dec. 6 (UPI) -- People in Iran should be prepared for possible crackdowns if upcoming Students Day demonstrations turn violent, Iranian authorities said.

Iranian authorities are readying for Monday's protests in recognition of the anniversary of a 1953 incident at the University of Tehran that left three university students dead at the hands of Iranian security forces, CNN said reported day.

Authorities urged calm during any rallies during Students Day and to avoid any repeat of the violence that reigned following Iran's June 12 elections that ended with President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad retaining his presidency by a significant margin.

"We expect the respected faculty and students, particularly given the current sensitive situation, to prevent anyone from possibly taking advantage of these ceremonies and to extend any and all needed cooperation to the hardworking members of the security forces," Iranian security forces said.

Tens of thousands of Iranian residents protested in the wake of the 2009 elections. CNN said the Iranian government accused Western governments of provoking the Iranian demonstrations.
