Episcopal nuns turn to Catholic Church

CATONSVILLE, Md., Sept. 4 (UPI) -- Most of the nuns in a Maryland order and their chaplain have left the Episcopal Church to become Roman Catholics.

Baltimore Archbishop Edwin O'Brien confirmed 10 nuns with the All Saints Sisters of the Poor in a service Thursday in the chapel of their Catonsville convent, The Baltimore Sun reported. Only two of the sisters in the convent did not make the move, although they plan to remain in the convent.

The Rev. Warren Tanghe, an Episcopal priest who had served as the convent's chaplain, has also become a Catholic.

Mother Christina Christie, the mother superior, said the group had been discussing leaving the Episcopal Church for several years.

"We know our beliefs and where we are," she said. "We were drifting further apart from the more liberal road the Episcopal Church is traveling. We are now more at home in the Roman Catholic Church."

Bishop Eugene Taylor Sutton, head of the Episcopal diocese of Maryland, released a statement wishing the sisters well: "Despite the sadness we feel in having to say farewell, our mutual joy is that we remain as one spiritual family of faith, one body in Christ."
