Inmate flees in leg irons, handcuffs

ELLICOTT CITY, Md., Aug. 15 (UPI) -- A prisoner who escaped from a sheriff's deputy in Maryland remained on the loose Friday.

Devin Champagne, 20, of Jessup used his handcuffs to choke the Howard County deputy Thursday night, The Baltimore Sun reported. He got out of the van in spite of leg irons and handcuffs.

A jury found Champagne guilty of felony theft about 11 p.m. Thursday. He was being transported to the county detention center at the time of his escape.

Champagne faces new charges, including attempted murder, aggravated assault and escape.

His family told the sheriff's office he stopped off at home and then left again.
