The Taliban claimed responsibility for the bombing, CNN reported.

Witnesses said a car loaded with explosives rammed a vehicle being driven by the soldiers, who were guarding a gasoline tanker making a fuel delivery near the embassy. The powerful blast set fire to nearby cars and buildings.

The blast happened at 9:30 a.m. while Afghan security officials were in the area stopping and checking every car, CNN reported, saying the blast could be felt blocks away.

"All the windows were blown in and we were covered with glass. Many of the injured were very badly hurt and some had all their clothes burned off," said Gulam Farooq Hamkar, 60, a mathematician at the nearby Academy of Science of Afghanistan who helped rescue injured people.
