Police search for Serb war crimes suspect

VALJEVO, Serbia, Nov. 10 (UPI) -- Witnesses say police armed with machine guns Monday searched a factory in Valjevo, Serbia, in their hunt for war crimes suspect Ratko Mladic.

The search was ordered by prosecutors seeking Mladic and those who have helped him avoid capture since he was indicted in 1995 by the United Nations war crimes tribunal in The Hague, the BBC reported.

Mladic is the most senior war crimes suspect still at large from the Bosnian conflict in the 1990s, the BBC reported, noting his superior, former Bosnian Serb leader Radovan Karadzic, is in custody and facing trial in The Hague.

Mladic, a former Bosnian Serb general, is charged with genocide and crimes against humanity for allegedly masterminding some of the main atrocities of the war, including a massacre at Srebrenica in which an estimated 7,500 unarmed Muslim men and boys were killed, the BBC reported, noting police released no details concerning their search of the factory in Valjevo.
