WASHINGTON, Aug. 28 (UPI) -- U.S. Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., will meet Thursday with the person he has chosen to be his running mate in the presidential election, an official says.

A senior campaign official said the presumptive Republican presidential candidate has held meetings with his top advisers this week and is set to officially notify his choice Thursday, Politico.com reported.

The general public will first hear McCain's choice for his running mate on Friday at a rally in Dayton, Ohio.

The Ohio appearance for the senator and his vice presidential choice will then be followed up by appearances at major rallies in Pennsylvania and Missouri this weekend, aides said.

Politico said the Missouri rally is also being tabbed as a potential rallying point for the Republican party as McCain's former primary rivals, former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney and former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee, are also expected to attend to support the senator.
