DENVER, Aug. 25 (UPI) -- Among delegates at the Democratic National Convention is former Army chaplain James Yee, whom the U.S. government wrongly believed was a spy.
The Seattle Times reported Monday that Yee, a Muslim, is part of Washington State's contingent for Democratic presidential hopeful Barack Obama.
Yee, a former chaplain at Fort Lewis in Washington, concedes that his presence at the convention in Denver might be controversial.
"There is some worry that I might be a lightning rod," Yee told the newspaper. " 'Accused terrorist spy is national delegate for Obama,' " he said.
Yee in 2002 was sent to Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, by the Army to minister to prisoners. After speaking out about detainee treatment, Yee was arrested that September.
"Basically, they said I was a traitor," said Yee, whose charges were dropped and received an honorable discharge from the Army.
