McCain's wife avoids property tax default

LA JOLLA, Calif., July 1 (UPI) -- Officials say Cindy McCain, heiress and wife of likely Republican presidential nominee John McCain, narrowly avoided tax foreclosure on a California condo.

The U.S. potential first lady oversees a trust which owns a La Jolla Shores condominium, occupied by her elderly aunt, and whose annual property taxes had not been paid for four years until last Friday, the San Diego Union-Tribune reported Tuesday. An electronic payment of $6,744.42 was made at 1 p.m. that day. On Monday, the remaining $1,742 was paid, narrowly beating the state's midnight deadline for default and foreclosure.

"We treat everybody equally when we send out late notices, default notices or time-to-pay-up notices," said Dan McAllister, treasurer-tax collector for San Diego County. said. "In this case, we relentlessly sent out notices to the McCains over the past year to pay up. No response."

A McCain aide told Newsweek last week that the bank managing the trust had not been receiving the tax bills on the property.
