March snow storms hit Ohio, head East

STATE COLLEGE, Pa., March 5 (UPI) -- Powerful winter storms that battered Ohio and other parts of the nation's midsection moved into the Northeast Wednesday, packing rain, snow and ice.

The storm system was forecast to drop 3 to 6 inches of snow from upstate New York to northern Maine, AccuWeather.com reported. Rainy weather in New England could cause flooding problems, especially in snow-covered areas, forecasters said.

Forecasters said sleet and freezing rain was possible, creating hazardous driving conditions and weighing down power lines.

The winter blast moved out of the Southeast after causing travel disruptions in the region, said AccuWeather.com. Meanwhile, rain and gusty winds were expected to taper off Wednesday over New Jersey, southern New York and southern New England.

River flooding was predicted to remain a hazard for much of the week, especially along the Ohio River Valley.

Airports around the country reported weather-related delays and electric power outages were widespread in states in the storm's path.
