'Love letter' from Sarkozy's friend

PARIS, Sept. 29 (UPI) -- A purported love letter carried by French President Nicolas Sarkozy actually was written to his wife, says the woman who wrote it.

"I could die laughing to see the havoc this letter has sparked" in the media, said Isabelle Balkany of Paris, a longtime friend of Nicolas and Cecilia Sarkozy, The Telegraph reported Saturday.

A photographer for gossip magazine Choc zoomed in on the letter as President Sarkozy carried it from a meeting Sept. 12, the British newspaper said.

"I feel like I haven’t seen you for an eternity and I miss you," the letter said, adding, "I would love to manage to see you in the week or next weekend. Millions of Besitos (Spanish for small kisses).”

"Why the president (had) that with him, I do not know," his spokesman, David Martinon, said of the letter.

The Sarkozys' lives are frequent tabloid fodder in France. Cecilia Sarkozy briefly left her husband in 2005 for Richard Attias, an events manager in New York, while Nicolas Sarkozy dated Le Figaro journalist Anne Fulda before the Sarkozys reunited, The Telegraph reported.
