FULLERTON, Calif., Sept. 8 (UPI) -- A former Cal State Fullerton admissions clerk has pleaded not guilty to charges of taking bribes to admit students and change grades.
Cathleen Louise Smith, who was also charged with possession of methamphetamine, was accused of using her computer access code to admit four Kuwaiti students who paid her bribes ranging from $700 to $2,000, The Los Angeles Times reported Saturday.
She was also charged with using her computer access code to change the grades of a fifth student for money.
The alleged irregularities were discovered during an internal review by the university.
After her arrest this year, Smith told the Times she considered the $2,000 she accepted from two Kuwaiti brothers to be a gift for admitting two academically eligible students. She denied knowing how to change grades.
A university spokesman said the school is trying to identify the involved students among its 35,921 graduates and undergraduates, and sanction them if they are still enrolled.
