Democrats aim for Virginia Senate

RICHMOND, Va., June 24 (UPI) -- The outcome of a state Senate race in the Tidewater district is seen as key to Republicans retaining control of the Virginia Senate, it was reported Sunday.

"It jeopardizes the Republican majority in the Senate, very definitely," said Vincent F. Callahan Jr., a Fairfax County Republican.

Tricia Stall's GOP primary victory over Sen. Marty E. Williams in the Tidewater district has Democrats cheerful about the possibility of their winning control of the state Senate, reported The Washington Times.

"This creates another battleground for us," said state Sen. Robert Creigh Deeds, a Bath County Democrat. "Miss Stall is a person who, at least from what she has said publicly, seems to be a pretty extreme candidate. It throws that district into play."

The Democrats need to win four seats in November to gain control of the Virginia Senate.
