Gaza calm as Hamas routs Fatah

GAZA, June 15 (UPI) -- The Gaza Strip was quiet Friday after a week of fighting among rival Palestinians that had Hamas militants routing Fatah members from their government offices.

About 100 people were killed in six days of fighting, including Fatah members executed in front of their families.

Early Friday, about 100 Fatah officials fled to Egypt, but Hamas leaders announced an amnesty for senior Fatah commanders, Voice of America reported from Jerusalem.

Among the facilities seized by Hamas fighters was the presidential office of Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas, the leader of Fatah. Late Thursday, Abbas dissolved the government, but Prime Minister Ismail Haniyeh of Hamas said Abbas had no such power and said the government was intact.

Most Fatah political and military facilities were ransacked and looted, VOA said.

While Hamas refuses to recognize Israel's sovereignty, Miri Eisen, a spokeswoman for Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert, said Israel has no plans to cut power or water to the Gaza Strip, which is home to about 1.5 million Palestinians.
