Commander of the USS Constitution fired

BOSTON, May 11 (UPI) -- U.S. Navy Cmdr. Thomas S. Graves has been fired from his post aboard the USS Constitution in Boston two months before his two-year term would have expired.

A Navy spokesman said "Old Ironsides'" commander was relieved of duty because confidence was lost in his ability to command the 210-year-old ship, The Boston Globe reported.

"This was due to an administrative matter," said Cmdr. Jeff Davis, Navy spokesman for the Pentagon. "We're not able to discuss the details of that. This is not something that is accompanying a disciplinary action. This was based solely upon the senior officers' assessment of his ability to command effectively."

The director of the Navy staff, Vice Adm. Mark Fitzgerald, was the one who fired Graves. His next post has not been determined, said Fitzgerald.

"His future plans are personal in nature," added Davis.

Graves took over as the commander of "Old Ironsides" in July 2005 at the Charlestown Navy Yard.
