More transfers in Ind. prison riot inquiry

NEW CASTLE, Ind., May 9 (UPI) -- A second round of inmates was transferred out of Indiana's New Castle Correctional Facility recently as part of an inquiry into last month's prison riot.

The 24 inmates from Arizona were transferred to the Wabash Valley Correctional Facility this week to aid in the inquiry into the riot, allowing 24 previously transferred Arizona inmates to return to the New Castle facility, The Indianapolis Star reported Wednesday.

Two employees at the New Castle facility were injured during the April 24 riot.

An official from The GEO Group, the company that runs the New Castle prison, said the original 24 inmates were brought back to the facility after they were judged not to have taken part in the riot.

Arizona resident Maria Laurelez told the Star her husband was among those transferred this week and admitted to being concerned for his well-being.

"It's just the heartache of not knowing. From what I've heard, Wabash is not a good facility. It's maximum security," she said. "The worst of the worst are there and that's what makes me uneasy."
