Gay pride parade proposed in Jerusalem

JERUSALEM, March 11 (UPI) -- Members of Israel's gay community have asked Jerusalem police for permission to hold a pride parade in June.

Police said the request for a June 21 parade is being reviewed, YNet News reported.

Ayelet Shnur, chairwoman of the Open House for Pride and Tolerance, the organization that filed the request, said the event is not only for members of the gay community.

"This is the main human rights demonstration which will be held in Jerusalem this year and it is planned for every citizen," she told YNet News.

She said violence during last year's pride parade strengthened the public's need to fight for the freedom of every person in Jerusalem.

Several months ago, Open House members held a "pride day" in Jerusalem, which led to riots and tensions between members of Jerusalem's gay and ultra-Orthodox communities.

Sa'ar Netane, a Jerusalem City Council member, told YNet that "last summer's events have taught us that it is important for the parade to march in Jerusalem."
