Report says Peretz may be replaced

JERUSALEM, Nov. 21 (UPI) -- Israeli Defense Minister Amir Peretz, whose relations with Prime Minister Ehud Olmert have soured, may be replaced, Ha'aretz reports, quoting Olmert aides.

The report said the issue reached a critical point this week after Olmert learned Peretz had allegedly spoken by telephone with Palestinian Authority Chairman Mahmoud Abbas to discuss his proposal for a mutual cease-fire.

The Army Radio reported that Olmert may tell Peretz he can stay in the Cabinet if he is willing to accept another post.

Among likely candidates who could replace Peretz are former Prime Minister Ehud Barak and current Defense Ministry Director General Gabi Ashkenazi, Ha'aretz said.
