Customs to be tenant in Freedom Tower

NEW YORK, June 30 (UPI) -- Federal agencies have agreed to rent one-quarter of the space in the Freedom Tower, the building planned to replace the World Trade Center in New York.

New York Gov. George Pataki announced that the U.S. Customs and Border Protection agency has agreed to lease 600,000 square feet, effectively renewing the arrangement it had in Tower 6. The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey signed a memorandum of understanding with the agency.

"We're hopeful that by September we'll be able to have leases that will be able to support that building financially," Anthony Coscia, the Port Authority chairman, said after Thursday's board meeting.

Also this week, David Childs, architect of the Freedom Tower, showed new plans that enclose the building in glass. The glass will cover a concrete base added to the design because of concerns about security.
