CIA report secrecy draws bipartisan fire

WASHINGTON, Sept. 17 (UPI) -- Members of Congress on both sides of the aisle are now publicly calling for the release of a classified CIA report that criticized the agency.

The New York Times reports that Sen. Pat Roberts, R-Kan., and Rep. Peter Hoekstra, R-Mich., have told CIA Director Porter Goss the public should have access to the report.

Both Roberts and Hoekstra are chairmen of their chambers intelligence committees.

The report by CIA Inspector General John Helgerson is said to be critical of former CIA Director George Tenet and other staff for their role in handling pre-Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist threats.

Goss hasn't decided if he will release the report, which was completed in 2002.
