U.S. judge's sentencing to be reconsidered

HARTFORD, Conn., April 20 (UPI) -- A federal judge has been ordered to reconsider a one-day sentence handed down to the embezzler of more than $350,000 from a Connecticut bank.

U.S. District Court Judge Peter C. Dorsey was told, in strong terms, by a federal appeals court that his sentencing of Susan K. Godding should be reconsidered, the Hartford (Conn.) Courant reported Wednesday.

Godding, who embezzled some $366,000 from the bank where she worked, could have been sentenced to 24 to 30 months in prison under federal guidelines. Dorsey ordered her to one day in jail -- saying she served that during her time at the sentencing hearing. She was also ordered to six months of home confinement, five years of probation and to repay the funds taken.

The appeals court questioned the "reasonableness" of the sentence and said "the sentence does not reflect and magnitude of the theft," the Courant said.

Godding is to be resentenced -- with the appeals court promising to check it for "reasonableness" -- May 17. She is also awaiting sentencing on state charges regarding a conviction of stealing from bookkeeping clients.
