Palestinians demonstrate for prisoners

JENIN, West Bank, April 17 (UPI) -- Families and supporters of Palestinian prisoners in Israel held demonstrations Sunday in the West Bank and Gaza to mark "prisoner day."

Hundreds of people gathered outside the Red Cross offices in the West Bank town of Jenin, holding up pictures of the prisoners and banners demanding they be released from Israeli jails.

Activists called on intensifying popular pressure to secure the release of the prisoners and urged the international community to press Israel to free them.

In Gaza City, Palestinian artists painted a huge mural on a wall depicting the "suffering of the prisoners in Israeli cells," according to the official Palestinian news agency.

It said the mural was two meters high and more than 10 meters long, drawn up by 10 Palestinian artists.
