Czech PM offers to resign

PRAGUE, Czech Republic, April 7 (UPI) -- Embattled Czech Prime Minister Stanislav Gross has offered to resign to prevent his government from collapsing, the CTK news agency reported Thursday.

The Social Democrat-led, three-party coalition has been mired in crisis for weeks due to a scandal over the financing of Gross's luxury apartment in Prague.

The Christian Democrats, the second largest party in the coalition, quit the government last week because of Gross's refusal to step down. The government lost its parliamentary majority in the process.

But on Thursday, the prime minister bowed to the inevitable and said he would resign if the Christian Democrats and the other party in the coalition, the Freedom Union, agreed to reform the government with the Social Democrats under a new leader.

Gross, at 35, is Europe's youngest prime minister. He has held the post for just eight months.
