Jordan, Egypt to supply power to Iraq

AMMAN, Jordan, March 12 (UPI) -- Officials in Jordan said Saturday the kingdom and Egypt have agreed to supply western Iraq with electric power upon the request of the Iraqi authorities.

The official Jordan News Agency, Petra, quoted Jordan's National Electric Company Director, Ahmad Hiyassat, as saying a 132-kilovolt power cable would be linked between al-Risheh power grid, near the Jordanian-Iraqi border, and the Ukashat area in western Iraq.

He said the cable would be 124 miles long.

Hiyassat said the Iraqi Electricity Ministry agreed with Electro-Energy Co., owned by private Iraqi investors, to construct the power line, while the Jordanian National Electric Company would act as consultant to the project.

He added that officials from Jordan, Egypt and Iraq were expected to meet and agree soon on the measures to export power from Jordan and Egypt to Iraq.

He said that Jordan, Egypt, Syria and Libya have already linked their power grids, adding that Lebanon and Turkey would soon be included in the same electric grids.
