Renoir painting stolen from condominium

TOKYO, Sept. 16 (UPI) -- A million-dollar painting by French artist Auguste Renoir has been stolen from a 14th-floor condominium in Osaka, the Yomiuri Shimbun reported Thursday.

The Osaka prefectural police said that a security guard found that the lock on a steel door of the condominium had been forced on the afternoon of April 25. Shortly afterwards, its owner discovered that the painting, "Nude in a Landscape," a masterpiece from 1876, was missing from the living room.

The owner, president of a real estate company, had bought the painting, which is approximately 12 inches high by 8 inches wide, for about $0.9 million. Other famous paintings and antiques in the condominium were left untouched.

The entrance to the condominium building locks automatically and a guard is stationed there on a full-time basis and periodically patrols the building, which is equipped with several surveillance cameras.
