Bush garbles boost Democrats

NASHUA, N.H., Aug. 31 (UPI) -- A series of gaffes by President Bush have revived Democrats' spirits as the Republican convention grabs headlines, The Washington Times said Tuesday.

The paper said the president had hoped for a triumphant, smooth-running Republican National Convention this week in Madison Square Garden in Midtown Manhattan. But instead he "has spent the past few days giving rhetorical ammunition to Sen. John Kerry."

Bush said Monday morning on NBC's "The Today Show" about the war against terror, "I don't think you can win it."

In other recent interviews, the president has called the invasion, conquest and occupation of Iraq "a catastrophic success" and admitted that his postwar plan for Iraq was "a miscalculation."

The Washington Times report said that the Kerry-Edwards campaign had "seized on the statements with a zeal not seen since Republicans savaged the Democratic candidate's call for a "more sensitive war on terror."
