Bird flu outbreak in Malaysia

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia, Aug. 19 (UPI) -- Malaysian agriculture officials confirmed Thursday bird flu has been detected in two chickens in the northern state of Kelantan.

Abi Musa Asa'ari Mohamed Nor, secretary-general of the Agriculture and Agro-Based Industry Ministry, said the instance of H5N1 is isolated and would be curbed within three weeks.

China's Xinhua news agency reported the outbreak occurred in the village of Baru Pasir Pekan about 100 kilometers (about 60 miles) from the Thai village of Narathiwat, where bird flu broke out in February and July. The Thai poultry industry suffered $880 million in losses as a result of the first outbreak.
