CHICAGO, July 12 (UPI) -- McDonald's has unveiled plans for a super-sized flagship restaurant on the site of the popular rock 'n' roll McDonalds near downtown Chicago.
Ronald McDonald pulled a cover off an artist's rendering of the new two-story, 300-seat restaurant during a Monday ceremony. It has a two-lane drive-thru, rooftop landscaping and expansive 60-foot "Golden Arches" protruding through the roof.
McDonald's has not decided whether the rock 'n' roll and movie memorabilia -- include guitars owned by Elvis Presley and Chuck Berry -- will be placed back on display at the futuristic outlet, which company officials expect to become a big tourist destination.
McDonald's is in the midst of a $16 million revitalization of 21 downtown area Chicago restaurants.
The first McDonald's, opened April 15, 1955, by founder Ray Kroc in Des Plaines, Ill., is now a company museum.
The 50th anniversary flagship restaurant will offer Wi-Fi Internet access for customers with laptops and Web-connected PDAs.
The new restaurant is scheduled to open next April.
