Kerry attacks Bush on science

WASHINGTON, June 21 (UPI) -- Presumptive U.S. presidential nominee John Kerry pledged Monday to support science as he said the Bush administration has not.

"If we pursue the limitless potential of science -- and trust that we can use it wisely -- we will save millions of lives and earn the gratitude of future generations," Kerry said. "We have the potential to do so much good while at the same time meeting some very practical challenges -- lowering healthcare costs and creating new jobs."

The Kerry campaign announced Monday that it will spend the week focusing on science. Kerry said as president he would lift the current ban on stem cell research and heed the recommendations of scientists.

Kerry endorsed a letter from 48 Nobel Laureates supporting his campaign in the name of science. The letter says the Bush administration is hindering science by reducing research funding, by restricting stem cell research and by making it more difficult for foreign scientists to come to the United States.

"Unlike previous administrations, Republican and Democratic alike, the Bush administration has ignored unbiased scientific advice in policy-making," the letter adds.
