Senate GOP still stuck on budget

WASHINGTON, June 1 (UPI) -- Debate over the 2005 budget resolution remains mired in intra-party conflict in the U.S. Senate that continues to threaten the $2.4 billion measure.

Senate Republican leaders returned Tuesday to what have been so far vain attempts to find a compromise on the bill, by promising moderate Republicans that a separate vote would be held on the contentious issue of how to pay for future tax cuts.

It remains to be seen if the deal will be enough to gain the support of GOP moderates who backed a portion of the Senate version of the bill cut from the final House-Senate compromise that required congress to pay for new all tax cuts and spending increases.

In addition, conservative backers of unlimited congressional control of cutting taxes are not expected to back the proposed compromise.

So far the standoff has been embarrassing for Republicans leaders keen to look strong in an election year.
