Britain may adopt high school proms

LONDON, March 2 (UPI) -- Britain, with one of the highest drop-out rates in the industrialized world, is considering adopting proms as a reward for completing high school.

The tuxedos, gowns and limousines of the typical U.S. high school prom could be part of the celebration that may induce some to complete their secondary degree, the BBC reported.

"We should recognize their achievements," said David Miliband, school standards minister.

"I am encouraged that various schools and local authorities are promoting the idea of graduation at 18 as a rite of passage for young people. It is appropriate and right."

However, Miliband said the education department had no "secret plans" to introduce a "national school prom day."
