Dean narrows gap but still behind

MANCHESTER, N.H., Jan. 26 (UPI) -- A new poll Monday showed Howard Dean has almost cut in half John Kerry's lead in New Hampshire, but he is behind in his bid to be the Democratic nominee.

The University of New Hampshire poll, released the day before the Granite State holds the first presidential primary of the year, showed Sen. Kerry of Massachusetts with 36 percent and Dean, the former governor of Vermont, still a very clear second at 25 percent.

The poll showed that Dean had stabilized and somewhat recovered his position. He had fallen as much as 20 points behind Kerry in polls last week. But he still had a big gap to close.

Sen. John Edwards, of North Carolina, trailed at 13 percent with retired Gen. Wesley Clark a weak fourth at 11 percent. Sen. Joe Lieberman of Connecticut has stumbled behind them in fifth place with only 7 percent, a showing that will likely drop him out of the race if confirmed by voters Tuesday.
