Car bomb in Afghanistan kills at least 6

KABUL, Afghanistan, Jan. 1 (UPI) -- At least six people are dead -- including a government body guard -- after a huge bomb blast Thursday near Afghanistan's main airport, the BBC reported.

A suicide bomber is believed to have detonated the device when Kabul's police tried to arrest him.

The dead include four police officers and the head of the Afghan defense minister's personal security detail.

Peacekeeping troops quickly cordoned off the highway west of the airport.

Security in Kabul is already high for the grand council which has been debating the country's constitution.

The deaths come four days after a home-made bomb damaged the outer wall of a U.N. residential compound.
