2 Time reporters hurt in Baghdad attack

BAGHDAD, Dec. 11 (UPI) -- A grenade thrown at U.S. forces patrolling Baghdad Wednesday wounded two Time Magazine journalists accompanying the patrol.

Time Senior Correspondent Michael Weisskopf and contributing photographer James Nachtwey along with two unidentified soldiers from the 1st Armored Division were wounded when a grenade hit their vehicle, military officials and the magazine said Thursday.

Initial reports indicate one journalist was seriously wounded, while the other was only slightly wounded, in the attack. Both are said to be in stable condition and awaiting medical evacuation to a U.S. military hospital in Germany.

Nachtwey -- who has been under contract for Time since 1984 -- is an award-winning photographer specializing in international conflicts. He was the subject of the 2001 documentary "War Photographer," which was nominated for an Oscar.

The Washington-based Weisskopf covers politics and investigations for Time and was a 1996 finalist for the Pulitzer Prize for national reporting.

At least 16 journalists have been killed reporting in Iraq since the start of the U.S.-led invasion.
