Haircut ridicule led to stabbing, fire

TOKYO, Dec. 6 (UPI) -- A Japanese teenager has told police he stabbed his mother repeatedly and set fire to the family home because she teased him about his haircut.

The 17-year-old was being held in custody Saturday for the Nov. 13 incident, charged with attempted murder and arson, Mainichi News reported.

The student told investigators the youth had grown his hair hip-length, but cut it short himself when his parents said he wouldn't find a job with long hair.

After cutting it, he told police his mother poked fun at him, and he became enraged and stabbed her repeatedly. As the 40-year-old woman stumbled from the house for help, the youth said he then set fire to a pile of laundry and fled. The house was gutted.

His trial begins this month.
