Muslim group wants India terror law voided

AHMEDABAD, India, Oct. 13 (UPI) -- A Muslim group in India has warned its members will take to the streets if an anti-terror law is not repealed.

The call was issued by the Jamiat-Ulama-e-Hind, at a meeting in Ahmedabad, capital of the western state of Gujarat. Without specifying Muslims, the group said the anti-terror law Prevention of Terrorism Act is being applied unfairly against India's minorities.

Gujarat was the scene of deadly Hindu-Muslim rioting last year. The clashes in which thousands died were in retaliation against Muslims some of whom had burned 57 Hindu women and children alive in a train carriage.

Several people have been arrested under the law as the country continues to be wracked by terrorist attacks, blamed largely on Muslims.

In a resolution issued Sunday, the Jamiat said of the 350 people booked under the law, all but one was from the minority community, the Telegraph newspaper said.

It said all accused in the train carnage had been arrested but those responsible for two subsequent retaliatory actions, blamed on Hindus, had been spared.

Some liberal Muslims did not attend the conference because of its religious tone.
