Boycotting senator takes holiday at home

AUSTIN, Texas, Sept. 2 (UPI) -- One of the boycotting Texas Democratic senators spent the Labor Day weekend at home but he is returning to New Mexico to talk about ending the standoff.

Sen. John Whitmire said he found his Houston constituents opposed to redistricting but they want the fight to be on the Senate floor in Austin. The senator said he would return to Albuquerque Tuesday to honor his commitment to his 10 fellow Democrats.

"I will discuss with my colleagues that we need an exit plan and we need it now," he said in a statement issued by his Austin office.

The Democrats are still holding out after a month although the second special session called on congressional redistricting ended last week with no action. Their absence kept the Republican majority from passing a GOP remap plan during the session.

Republican Gov. Rick Perry has threatened to call a third special session on redistricting when the senators return to Texas.
