Serena Williams withdrew from next week's Wuhan Open and the China Open due to the shoulder injury that plagued her during the Rio Olympics and the U.S. Open.

Williams, who lost her No. 1 ranking to Angelique Kerber at the U.S. Open, told CNN she was "tired of playing tournaments unhealthy and taking losses I would never lose."

Williams, 34, won Wimbledon and reached the Australian and French Open finals, but lost to Karolina Pliskova in the semifinals of the U.S. Open. The Wuhan Open and China Open are the two biggest tournaments leading up to next month's season-ending WTA Finals.
