MINNEAPOLIS, Sept. 21 (UPI) -- So much for Minnesota Vikings coach Mike Zimmer's optimism.

On Wednesday, ESPN's Josina Anderson reported that Adrian Peterson will undergo surgery to repair a torn meniscus Thursday. He will be out for a "minimum" of 3 to 4 months, Anderson reported.

Peterson has a "bucket handle tear," according to Anderson. The 31-year-old All-Pro running back was off to a slow start in 2016, averaging a career-low 1.6 yards per carry. Peterson had 31 carries for 50 yards through two games before leaving Sunday's game against the Green Bay Packers with the injury.

After the victory, Zimmer told reporters that Peterson "might miss a week."

Interestingly, Peterson has just one year left on his three-year, $44 million contract with the Vikings. There is no doubt that pending discussions will take place regarding Peterson's NFL future, following multiple major knee surgeries.

If Peterson is on your fantasy team, wait to drop him until the Vikings officially put him on I.R. Even if he isn't on your team, look to add Jerick McKinnon and Matt Asiata. McKinnon could provide high-end RB2 value down the stretch, but will be limited by Asiata's goal-line touches.
