Steve Spagnuolo reassumes New York Giants defensive coordinator role

The New York Giants announced that Steve Spagnuolo has been hired as their defensive coordinator, the same position he held with the team from 2007-08.

In both of his seasons leading the New York D, the unit finished top-10 in the league in yards allowed, and the Giants won Super Bowl XLII when they knocked off the then-undefeated New England Patriots.

"The energy, enthusiasm and strong personality that we saw before in Steve Spagnuolo, all of that was very evident again," said Giants coach Tom Coughlin. "His desire to be a Giant again was very, very obvious."

Spagnuolo is replacing Perry Fewell, who was fired by the Giants earlier this month after they finished 2014 with a 6-10 record and the 29th-ranked defense. Fewell also won a Super Bowl with New York,

After his first two seasons with the Giants, Spagnuolo was hired as the head coach of the St. Louis Rams. In three seasons, St. Louis won just 10 games, including a 1-15 finish his first season on the job.

The following season, Spagnuolo was hired as the New Orleans Saints' defensive coordinator. Head coach Sean Payton would be suspended that season because of the team's bounty scandal, and the defense proceeded to allow the most yards in a season in NFL history.

He was fired after one season.

Spagnuolo has spent the last two seasons as an assistant coach for the Baltimore Ravens under John Harbaugh, who he had previously coached with on the Philadelphia Eagles staff. Spagnuolo coached with the Eagles for eight seasons before being hired by the Giants in 2007.

The Giants also announced that Tim Walton was hired to coach the secondary.
