RICHMOND, Va., Sept. 7 (UPI) -- Carl Edwards edged Kurt Busch to win at Richmond, Va., Saturday in a regular season-ending race that determined the remainder of the Sprint Cup playoff field.
Edwards grabbed the lead from Paul Menard during a three-lap sprint to the finish and held off Busch by 0.7 seconds at the end to claim his second win of the season.
Ryan Newman finished third, but didn't make the 12-driver championship Chase for the Sprint Cup Championship. He was followed by Jamie McMurray and Menard.
Seventh-place finisher Clint Bowyer did make the playoffs, taking the second and final wild card spot in a tiebreaker with Michael Waltrip Racing teammate Martin Truex Jr.
Kasey Kahne finished 14th and claimed the first wild card position. Joey Logano's 22nd-place showing enabled him to beat out Jeff Gordon for the last Top-10 points spot in the Chase.
Defending Sprint Cup champion Brad Keselowski, meanwhile, ended up missing the Chase with a 17th-place finish.
