Carl Edwards wins Sprint Cup pole in Michigan

BROOKLYN, Mich., June 14 (UPI) -- Carl Edwards circled the Michigan International Speedway at 202.452 miles per hour Friday to win the pole for the Sprint Cup series Quicken Loans 400.

Edwards won the 12th pole of his Sprint Cup career and his first since the 2012 Daytona 500. He has won twice at the Michigan track and will enter Sunday's race in second place in the season-long points race.

Kurt Busch qualified second at 201.879 mph, one of 13 drivers to exceed 200 mph.

Kasey Kahne, Paul Menard and Aric Almirola filled out the next three qualifying spots, followed by Joey Logano, Austin Dillon, Matt Kenseth, Kyle Busch and Juan Pablo Montoya.

Current points leader Jimmie Johnson qualified 17th, having won last week's race in Pocono, Pa.
