Wainwright signs contract with St. Louis

JUPITER, Fla., March 28 (UPI) -- Right-handed starting pitcher Adam Wainwright has agreed to a five-year contract with the St. Louis Cardinals, the team said Thursday.

The deal is believed to be worth approximately $100 million, the St. Louis Post Dispatch reported. The Cardinals, while not releasing a figure, said the deal was the largest contract in team history for a pitcher.

"Adam represents everything the Cardinals look for in a player," Cardinals Chairman Bill DeWitt Jr. said in a statement. "He is an elite pitcher with a tremendous work ethic, a great teammate and leader, and a winning, championship caliber player. He has the highest personal qualities and personifies the Cardinals tradition of excellence."

Wainwright, 31, missed the 2011 season due to Tommy John surgery but returned last season with a 14-13 record and 3.94 earned run average in 198 2/3 innings.

He is 80-48 with a 3.15 ERA in 214 games in his career. He was second in the National League Cy Young Award voting after winning 20 games in 2010.

Bucknell basketball coach gets contract

LEWISBURG, Pa., March 28 (UPI) -- Bucknell men's basketball Coach Dave Paulsen has agreed to a new five-year contract with the school, it was announced Thursday.

Financial terms of the agreement weren't released but it takes effect immediately and lasts through the 2017-18 season.

"The Bucknell men's basketball program has achieved an incredible amount of success under the leadership of head coach Dave Paulsen and I am pleased that Dave will be here to continue to grow the storied tradition of Bison basketball," Athletic Director John Hardt said.

"The passion and enthusiasm that he brings to work every day have clearly rubbed off on his team and his staff. The landscape of college basketball is rapidly changing and I look forward to working with Dave through these new and exciting challenges."

Paulsen just completed his fifth season at Bucknell. The Bison were 28-5 overall this past season, advancing to the second round of the NCAA Tournament. After a combined 21-40 record Paulsen's first two seasons, Bucknell is 78-24 with three Patriot League titles the last three.

Paulsen, 48, previous coached at St. Lawrence, Le Moyne and Williams and has a combined coaching record of 361-184 in 19 seasons. He won the 2003 NCAA Division III championship while at Williams.

Seim leads European Tour stop in Morocco

AGADIR, Morocco, March 28 (UPI) -- Marcel Siem overcame an early bogey for an 8-under-par 64 Thursday and leads the European Tour's Trophee Haasan II tournament in Morocco.

Siem had a pair of eagles to go with five birdies and a second-hole bogey in taking a three-stroke lead.

Alvaro Velasco opened with three consecutive birdies en route to a 5-under 67 and is in second place. David Horsey, Graeme Storm and Simon Wakefield are tied for third at 4-under.

Winds drove up scores for the early players and only four players with morning tee times broke par. But Siem played in the afternoon and took advantage of better playing conditions.

After the bogey at the No. 2, Siem holed his approach shot at the par-4, 433-yard third hole for eagle and followed that with birdies at No. 4 and 5. He opened his second nine with birdies at 10 and 11 that tied him with Velasco for first.

He closed with an eagle at the par-5, 511-yard 17th hole and a birdie at 18 for the three-shot lead.
